GENSA, as it was called at its inception - the Gastroenterological Nurses Society of Australia, was founded in 1978 to create a voice for gastroenterology and endoscopy nursing practice. It is still the only national organisation to collectively meet the needs of this nursing speciality.
In 1994, GENSA was involved with Australian Standards in the draft, development and publication of AS4187 - a document on the reprocessing of endoscopes and other reusable equipment. The name was changed to Gastroenterological Nurses College of Australasia, GENCA, in 2001 and currently has over 1,500 members across Australia and New Zealand.
